Ascott International asked BuckleyGrayYeoman to transform the interior spaces of a remarkable early 20th century building in the heart of Paris to create this boutique 5 star Apart’hotel.

Located just minutes from the Louvre Museum, this boutique serviced residence consists of 51 luxurious one-bedroom and studio apartments over 7 floors. Custom-made furniture and furnishings were created specifically for the interiors whilst retaining the building’s period features.

Guests enter Citadines Suites Louvre through a dramatic double-height lobby space. A large skylight frames views of the atrium overhead, creating a light-filled, open space to welcome guests. Notable design features, including the restored floor mosaic and modern laser-cut metal ceiling, create a space were craftsmanship and contemporary design meet.

The design of Citadines Suites Louvre creates a ‘home from home’ feel through an acute attention to detail. The apartments are fitted with bespoke hand-tuffed rugs, solid plaster relief wallpaper and oak parquet flooring, giving the feel of a luxury Parisian residence.

The newly completed Citadines Suites Louvre has recently been long listed in the Hotels category of the World Interiors News Awards 2014. The full long list is available to view here.

Designer Choices

BuckleyGrayYeoman Associate, Jacqueline Senior has been featured in the June 2014 issue of FX Magazine in a special ‘Focus on Flooring’ article. Jacqueline discusses the bespoke design for The Buckley Building in Clerkenwell.

‘Due to the angled geometry of the building at the main entrance, the incorporation of a conventional matwell proved a challenge. A bespoke design was conceived, based on the tactile paving found at pedestrian crossings, to form a series of matwell discs. This was developed with Intramatting Systems to provide customised stainless steel grommets within which to secure the entrance matting discs, which sit in core-drilled holes in the floor…a simple yet very elegant flooring solution.’

Clerkenwell Design Week 2014

Silicon Folly

Clerkenwell Road | 20th – 22nd May

Icon magazine has invited Buckley Gray Yeoman to rethink the eyesore that is Old Street roundabout. Our design is displayed on a plinth along Clerkenwell Road opposite the Vitra showroom throughout the 3 day festival.

As the centre of London’s new silicon economy, everyone knows that Old Street roundabout is going places. If nothing else, it is a development site with huge potential in a prime slice of real-estate.

Recent schemes have sought to capitalise on this potential with proposals for new road networks, events spaces and even towers to be built here.

That’s fine. The site will be regenerated and the roundabout will – one day – be lovely.

But is there something we can do right now?

Our proposal for Old Street roundabout looks to play with the existing structures and constraints, and offer something which can be implemented immediately! A pop-up folly which heightens the presence of the roundabout and forms a bold new focal point for the junction.

It won’t change the world. But it will look great. For the meantime anyway.

Design Pilgrims flock to Milan in April to the worlds most important design fair, the Salone del Mobile 2014. The event this year inhabits more areas of the city than ever before from the Rho Fairgrounds, to Brera and Milan’s central design district. And this year fashion designers are getting in on the act in a big way!

The organised designer started planning their trip months ago… I like to fly by the seat of my pants so my whirlwind weekend in Milan was organised within 24 hours notice. Thank goodness I got some good insider tips when I arrived.

At the Rho Fairground there was hall after hall of design houses to explore. The impact of the global financial crisis can still, in the furniture industry and perhaps as a result of these big manufacturers, seem to focus on reinterpreting classic pieces often in collaboration with fashion, think Paul Smith & Hans Wegner, or the use of a star designer for built-in cache, Patricia Urquiola & Moroso or the Bouroullec brothers & Mattiazzi.

Outside the Fairground, the exhibition is scattered amongst sites and shops all over town with locals and visitors alike wandering the streets to enjoy the sunshine, prosecco and design.

This fertilization through the whole city allows the visitor a rare opportunity to see inside the hidden gems of Milan’s buildings. The city can sometimes seem closed and austere, so the chance to see some of the beauty hidden behind the walls and inside the gates is not to be missed!

This year’s highlight for me was Hermès ‘Home Universe’ exhibition at the spectacular late 18th-century Palazzo Serbelloni. It housed the new lighting collection by Hermès, and at the entrance a wonderful Pierre Marie fabric ‘Jardin D’Osier Imprimé’ was used to create a ‘living wall’ inside the gallery.

The other stand out building was the Museo Bagatti Valsecchi, which hosted the ‘Untold’ exhibition curated by Rossana Orlandi.

Oh and last but not least, it appears that the trends across the board from the Fairground include, velvet, vintage lighting, sideboards and a mid-century mood, with blue, red and mustard being the standout colours.

Our ‘pop-up’ office space, The Black & White Building, has been featured in Design Exchange magazine’s first edition of 2014. The refurbishment of The Black & White Building makes a significant improvement to Rivington Street, creating a highly recognisable landmark building that embodies the new ambition of the Shoreditch area.

Buckley Gray Yeoman architects Amr Assaad and Claire Osborne are photographed in front of the finished building. Amr Assaad explains,

`The Black & White Building provides comfortable, flexible office space in a building brimming with historic industrial character. Our refurbishment put a contemporary twist on the existing building. We retained and emphasised the best of the original fabric and made that the starting point for a stylish interior fit-out that celebrates the edgy character and energy of Shoreditch.’
